D&RGW Classification of Locomotives

number plate 268.jpg (2433 bytes)Railroads typically use some type of classification system to designate the size of a locomotive. Originally, the Denver and Rio Grande classed their locomotives by the weight of the locomotive. In addition to the class designation, each locomotive is given its own road number.

In 1924 the entire system was reorganized and the newly merged Rio Grande Western equipment was added.

After the ownership change in 1924, a classification system was adopted that was based on wheel type and tractive effort. In the new system, the class was represented by using a letter for the locomotive wheel type, followed by a number to represent the tractive effort. Thus, a Mikado wheel type with 37,000 pounds of possible tractive effort was classed as K-37.
