As the Colorado River begins to carve into the plateau country west of Grand Junction,  it enters the magnificent Ruby canyon. Access to the canyon is very limited due to the vertical sides of the red sandstone walls. There is no population living at Ruby. Rather is is just a long siding in the arid wilderness.

The Denver and Rio Grande Railway and the Denver and Rio Grande Western built tracks along the Colorado River through Ruby Canyon as part of the great transcontinental route from Denver to Salt Lake City. When first constructed in 1881, the tracks were laid narrow gauge. In 1889, the newly formed Rio Grande Western converted the line to standard gauge and improved the alignment for higher speeds.
