Rifle, CO Rifle is located about 63 miles northeast of Grand Junction on the northern bank of the Colorado River. It has long been a supply point for ranchers in the area and more recently a tourist stop for those venturing into the White River National Forest. Legend has it that the town gets its name from a surveyor that was working in the area. It seems he left his rifle leaning against a tree near what would become the town site. The surveyor noted on his map the word "rifle" to indicate where he had left the gun. Later this was transcribed from his notes, being the only map of the area, as the name of the town. Today Rifle still thrives as a tourist gateway and ranching center.
THE RAIL YARD In 1890 the D&RG railroad built through Rifle on its way from Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction. A Depot, Freight House, Section House, Coal Tipple and Water Tank were built. A large wye was incorporated into the tracks along with a passing siding and eventually additional storage tracks.
