Taos Junction, NM This railroad junction is located on a wide flat high mesa in Northern New Mexico just west of the Rio Grande Gorge. It was never much of a town, just basic railroad facilities and some ranch support. Track branched off the main line here and traveled to La Madera. This was the last narrow gauge branch built by the D&RG. Tracks were laid in 1914 to the lumber operations at La Madera sawmill via Ojo Caliente. In 1932 the line was abandoned when the mill shut down and most of the timber had been cut. At one time a stage/taxi line operated from the junction to Taos. You could depart from the train and travel east, across the Rio Grande Gorge and eventually into Taos. Today nothing remains of the railroad, or the town. But you can easily drive to the location on Highway 285 and look around for yourself.
DEPOT A box car served for the Depot until a new two story structure with wood siding and shingle roof was constructed in 1915.
