Monte Vista, CO Monte Vista means "mountain view" in Spanish and it describes the sight as you look from the edge of the San Luis Valley towards the west. The San Juan mountains rise sharply out of the high plains near this location. The town's original name was Lariat and this changed to Henry in 1884. Two years later the town decided they liked the ring of Monte Vista better and so the name changed again and this time it stuck. The area experienced rapid growth in the 1880's as various industries began to prosper. Agriculture surrounds the town and lumber lies a short trip away in the mountains thereby providing lots of shipping revenue for the railroad. Today the Coors beer malt barley elevator is the second largest shipper in the region. In 1881 when the railroad came to town a depot, section house, and water tank were constructed.
