Cascade, CO Cascade is located at the confluence of Cascade Creek and the Animas River, about 22 miles south of Silverton. This is a quaint little valley and has been the site of several Hollywood movie productions. In 1882 the Silverton branch of the railroad was constructed through Cascade. The railroad maintained a small section camp here. Many different structures that served the railroad were within a few miles. There was a section house, bunk house, coal house and stock pens. There is a wye located about a mile south of the siding that is used today to turn trains that do not go all the way to Silverton. During the 1870's and 1880's a stage stop operated at the nearby town of Tefft. It was also a staging point for the original toll road through the area. There was a large sawmill in the area at one time that produced much of the timber for the railroad and mines. Spruce-fir logs were cut and floated to the mill on the Animas River. The boiler of the Gold King locomotive from the Silverton Northern is rusting away near Tefft. You can still see the iron bridge that crosses the Animas River at MP477.8 near Cascade.
