Granby, CO Granby lies in the Fraser River Valley about 20 miles North of Winter Park. Ranching and farming are the principle industries in the area. Founded in 1905 by the Denver, Northwestern and Pacific railroad, the town was named after the U.S. District Attorney, Granby Hiller. In just a year the town had over 30 dwellings as well as 2 hotels, 2 restaurants, and the ever popular, 4 saloons. The town was once a shipping point on the railroad for vegetables, cattle and timber. Today the most of the old ranches have been converted into Guest Ranches for the tourism industry. Grand Lake and other mountain lake recreation areas are just north of Granby and account for much of the tourist traffic through town.
