Craig, CO Craig is the seat of Moffat County. It lies on the Yampa river about 40 miles west of Steamboat Springs. The area is fairly flat as the mountains dwindle into the east. Natural resources are abundant in the region where coal and oil are some of the biggest sources of industry.
HISTORY William Rose was first to settle at the site along Fortification Creek. The town was called Rose at first. Then in 1887 Reverend Bayard Craig settled in the area and helped finance and layout the town. In 1888 the town was incorporated and the named changed to Craig. Later, Craig became a trade center for ranches in the area. Coal was discovered in the region and a small boom began exploiting the fossil fuel. The Denver Northwestern and Pacific railroad laid tracks into Craig and to the local coal mines. In 1925 oil was discovered in the region and Craig became an important producer in Colorado.
TODAY Craig still thrives on the natural resources being produced and a smaller amount on tourism. The largest coal fired power plant in the state is located a few miles from Craig.
