Sapinero, CO Pronounced by locals as either "sap-in-AIR-o" or "saw-pin-arrow", Sapinero gets its name from a variation on the Ute Indian name "Sapawanero". It seems he was Chief Ouray's assistant and brother-in-law. The town of Sapinero was located in the valley at the east entrance to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Prior to the railroad, Sapinero was a stage stop for travelers. This was always a place where folks stopped to rest and prepare for the difficult journey ahead. It was also the junction point for the branch line to Lake City and was a shipping point for cattle and sheep. In time this place where most people were "just traveling through" actually moved itself, the whole town. It seems Sapinero was destined for an underwater grave as the waters of Blue Mesa Reservoir now cover the original town site. What is left has moved to the other side of the lake.
THE RAILYARD Although there was not a lot of structures in Sapinero there was a depot and engine house along with a couple of travel hotels. The Engine House had 2 stalls and was later removed because there was no need for helper engines in the area around Sapinero.
