Paonia, CO Paonia, which is a Spanish derivative for "peony" the flower, was founded in 1882. The main industries are mining and agriculture. Paonia is known for producing wonderful peaches, apples, and other fruits. Fruit, coal and climate have made Paonia the largest town in the North Fork Valley of the Gunnison River, gateway to McClure and Kebler Passes and the West Elk Mountains. Today Paonia and the surrounding area has a population of about 3,700. Main sources of income are from fruit orchards, livestock, coal and timber. Paonia was on the North Fork branch of the D&RG. The branch line begins at Delta and follows the North Fork Gunnison River all the way to the mines at Somerset. The branch was constructed in 1902 and narrow gauge track was laid on standard gauge rails. In 1906 the tracks were converted to standard gauge when the Montrose to Grand Junction tracks were changed. |
