Cimarron, CO Cimarron is located in the last hospitable valley before entering the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Here is where the trains could rest before entering the canyon or add helper engines prior to pushing onto Cerro Summit. This is where the railroad tracks wisely climb out of Black Canyon for a somewhat "easier" route over the steep 4 percent grade to Cerro Summit. The town of Cimarron was an important helper station for the railroad between Gunnison and Montrose. Most of the folks living there worked for the railroad in some way. There were three engine crews running the locomotives and a 4 stall Roundhouse to service the equipment. Besides the Depot there was a Freight House, Coal Bin, Agent House, Section House, Bunk House, Sand House and Ice House in the small valley.
Just prior to entering the Black Canyon the railroad crossed Crystal Creek over a steel deck truss bridge. The bridge is still in place and holds engine 361 on display along with a box car and caboose. You can easily drive to the display area at the base of Morrow Point dam.
