Concrete bridge at Helper, UT 1999
Begining in the 1920's, many of the older wood and iron bridges were
replaced with concrete structures. At first the concrete was cast in place
on formwork. Eventually, modern pre-cast and pre-stressed concrete
structures became the norm. These bridges are made of beam and deck
sections that are cast at a concrete shop and then hauled by truck to the
site and erected with a crane. The abutments, deck, and wingwalls are
still cast in place.
