Bridge crossing structures come in many shapes and sizes on a railroad. The Rio Grande railroads have  used many combinations of bridge types and materials. Wood was the primary building material in the early days. Steel and concrete structures eventually replaced many of the original wood bridges.

Many crossing structures are adapted from standard detail drawings as the railroad is constructed. Instead of re-inventing the wheel each time a crossing was needed, the builders simply copied a structure from another location. Standard structures like these allowed the same design to be used repeatedly almost like a cook book. Using standards the builders would fit each structure to the supporting landscape while staying within maximum limits for the type of structure.

Bridges were also created from used structures that were moved to a new site or even built up out of parts of structures no longer in use.
